Tye-Dye Creations

Toddler

Over the summer the toddler group has been experimenting with different types of dye.  We started with a small batch of natural dye using spices.  We created many shades of yellow and brown which we used for watercolour paintings.  The next time we created a bigger batch of natural dye using different types of foods, such as beets and onion skins, to create a bigger variety of colours.  The toddlers dyed scraps of fabric this time, however we observed that the natural dye produced only a subtle amount of colour on the fabric.  The children seemed to be enjoying the process of exploring this style of art so much we decided to try tie dye next!

On tie dye day each child brought in their white item, most brought T-shirts, a few brought socks and a few brought pillowcases.  The children worked one at a time, they were given a choice of which style tie dye they wanted; bulls eye, spiral or striped.  Educator Heather wrapped up their fabric according to the style they selected and they were ready to get to work!  They selected the colours they wanted to use, which provided an opportunity for us to strengthen our knowledge of colour recognition and even a bit of colour mixing.  They developed their fine motor skills as they used the squeeze bottles to apply the dye to their fabric.  Strong, stable muscles in the fingers, hand, and wrist are foundational to developing early writing skills.  Each piece was a completely unique piece of art as every child was able to make choices every step of the process.

This activity provided the children a way to express themselves creatively and exercise their independence and autonomy.  As they continue wear their T-shirt’s or socks, or go to bed on their pillowcase they can recall and reflect on their creation with a sense of pride, building a positive self image and confidence!
