We have been working hard on our numbers and colours in the preschool room, with number games and colour recognition activities being a prominent focus of our learning experiences each day. Numbers and colours play such an important role in our day-to-day life here at preschool, and understanding them helps to support a child’s cognitive development and sets the foundations for both literacy and early math skills.
One chilly morning while we were stuck inside, we decided to combine the two with a colour-matching number game! We wrote the numbers 1 through 6 on a large piece of paper, and assigned each number with its own colour. For example, yellow for #1, red for #2, and so on. We used both numbers and colours that were familiar to the preschoolers to continue building their confidence and strengthening their knowledge in each area. As the children approached the table, we offered them a coloured stamp and asked them to identify the colour before matching it to the correct number on the table.
While this was certainly a challenging activity for the preschoolers, we were amazed (but not surprised!) to see them excel at it, and to watch as they observed, identified patterns and problem solved alongside their peers.
