Over the month of October, the children in School-Age 1 have taken an interest in anything having to do with letter recognition. The group has engaged in letter hunts, group experiences involving rhyming, and so much more. The educators in the program took notice of this and provided an experience to the children that would scaffold on this growing interest. The group engaged their teamwork skills as they participated in a letter hunt. This experience had the children using their innovative thinking as when they found a letter, they then had to name something that started with that letter. Once they were able to identify this, they were able to take the letter and find the matching letter on the board and place it on top. For some children, this experience provided a challenge as they were not quite able to identify the sounds some letters made. Some of the older SK children were then able to step in and take some initiative and help their younger peers in finding a word. Seeing the group work together was just another chance for this group to come together and create a sense of belonging, strengthen relationships, and build self-empowerment.
