Drawing Contest

School-age 3

Throughout the month of November, the School-Age group 3 children have been busy engaged in a drawing competition. The idea of this competition started one afternoon when Arran focused and determined to finish a free hand drawing that he was working on. Using his creative expression, he created an insect and drew it to scale. Using his knowledge of bugs and imagination, he made his creation come to life. His final step was to add colour and then show it off to his peers. Arran displayed a sense of accomplishment in his work, and even began showing it off to the other School-age groups as well. Conversation then began to start amongst the group, which in turn prompted the interest for the contest. As a group, we then decided to have 4 top winners for the contest, in which a prize would be rewarded.

The following day after school, each individual who wanted to partake in the contest began planning out how they wanted their picture to look. Using imagination, hand-eye coordination and creative expression, they began bringing their pictures to life. Charlotte mentioned “I want to have a combined picture with Lauren so that we can submit it as one drawing.” They demonstrated a collective agreement with this as they began to draw. Emily T and Yulia’s drawings had a main focus of flowers and various colours. Emily Z even incorporated remembrance day by creating a picture of a solider with the words Lest We Forget. Some of the designed pictures were based on the interests of those in the group, such as Dylan’s being a baseball player and Mason’s having pandas incorporated in his drawing.

Everyone showed determination and focus as they engaged in this experience, and it showed just by how detailed each and every picture was. The group cannot wait to highlight all of the drawings in the childcare center for everyone to see once the contest is over. Keep an eye out!
