Colour Mixing

Preschool

Over the past month, the children in the preschool program have been exploring with a variety of colours. There has been growing conversation and interests with each experience that has been presented to the group. This interest is what led to a colour mixing activity. Throughout this experience, the children were able to experiment with different colour combinations such as: yellow and blue, red and blue and also red and yellow.

Prior to starting the activity, the children put their critical thinking on display as they identified each colour and made estimations about the outcome from certain colour combinations. The colours of paint were then placed into cups before the children dipped their fingers in. Each colour was then dabbed onto paper before being mixed together. Afterwards, the children observed and watched new colours emerge!

Discoveries were also made in regard to shades of colours. Once the colour green was created from the blue and yellow combination, the children discovered that they could also create a lighter shade of green using more yellow! Natalie pointed to her paper and said, “Look at the green, it looks different.” It became a lime green shade!

This experience provided an opportunity for the children to expand on their experimental learning and curiosity while discovering new and exciting colours! This gave the children the opportunity to learn more about pigmentation and how it works. During this activity, the children also enjoyed the sensory aspect, as they glided their fingers along their papers.
