Snow Painting

School-age 1

The air this month has been crisp to say the least, so we took this as the perfect opportunity to bring the outdoors inside! During our gross motor time, our children filled two large sensory bins with snow. Theo took the time to find large blocks of packed snow to toss in, while Nathan stood on top of them to crush them into place. After bringing them inside, we filled containers with water and food colouring to use as our paint pots. The children flexed their fine motor skills by using eye droppers to create frozen masterpieces.

During the initial painting activity, it was interesting to watch them discover that if they rotated the eye dropper, it would disappear then reappear as they reversed the rotation. They also worked on exploring colour theory by mixing and diluting the water into different colours and hues.

Additionally, we added a secondary activity by tie dying coffee filters to turn them into rainbow snowflakes using the coloured snow we created. They used tiny shovels and cups to transfer the coloured snow onto the filter, then watched as it melted leaving a stained colour behind.

Going forward, we are excited to continue exploring snow (we had a great suggestion from a parent to try snow volcanoes) and will be sure to add colour exploration to our discovery list!
