Mathematical Music

  • Preschool

This month, the children explored their early numeracy skills through engaging, hands-on experiences focused on number recognition, matching, sorting, and patterning. By incorporating their interests in music, colours, and games, we created meaningful opportunities for the preschool children to explore mathematical concepts through play.

Amanda introduced a music and numeracy activity using instruments and music sheets displaying different numbers of notes. She asked, “Can we count how many notes we see?” Janie and Joshua used their fingers to count and excitedly answered, “Four!” Amanda celebrated their thinking and introduced the corresponding numeral. The children then explored playing their instruments the same number of times as the notes displayed. As the children became more familiar with the music sheets, Amanda extended their learning by inviting them to play their instruments the same number of times as the notes displayed. When Amanda asked, “How many times should we shake our instruments?”  Julia, Parker, and Theo enthusiastically shouted, “ONE!” This experience helped the children connect numbers with quantities through music and movement.

To extend their learning Amanda introduced a second activity featuring colour-coded numbers arranged in a specific pattern, along with a blank music sheet and a collection of laminated numbers in corresponding colours. She invited the children to participate by asking, “Can we match this music sheet?” Janie carefully matched the numbers and colours while confidently identifying each numeral. Amanda encouraged her by saying, “Great job, Janie!” Noah and Adelyn also worked together to complete the pattern, with Noah confidently naming each number as they matched it. We concluded our numeracy exploration with a fun game of UNO! Jenn created a colour board using red, blue, green, and yellow construction paper and invited the children to sort UNO cards by colour and identify the numbers displayed. Parker excitedly shared, “I have UNO at my house!” As he placed his card on the green paper, he said, “It’s three, and I’m three too!” Janie used her fingers to represent the number on her card, while Nikolai proudly held up his card and announced, “Three!”

These playful experiences encouraged the children to practice number recognition, counting, colour matching, and patterning while developing their communication, problem-solving, and collaboration skills. Through music, colours, patterns, and familiar games, they explored number recognition, counting, sorting, matching, and problem-solving while developing their communication, collaboration, and active listening skills. Most importantly, the children were encouraged to learn at their own pace, share their ideas, and make meaningful connections through playful exploration. We look forward to continuing to build on their curiosity and growing confidence as they discover new mathematical concepts in their everyday environment.+
