Getting to Know Each Other

School-age 1

This past month the children from School-age 1 were participating in a body tracing activity. The children worked with partners and each child traced their partner’s body on the large piece of paper. They used markers, scissors, and crayons to complete this activity. After they traced the body, they got to cut them out following the lines. The cut-out body shapes were then decorated with the children adding in clothes of different colours, as well as personalizing the hair, facial expressions, and eye colour.

Demi was tracing Millie's body and making sure that the size is exactly the same. She learned about height by comparing hers to Millie's; Demi found that she is taller than Millie. Parker and Daniel worked together as partners in this activity. Parker cut out the body shape that Daniel traced, and added in many details; he included the colour of his hair, a smiley face, and even his clothing. Josie had enjoyed decorating her body shape by colouring the clothes in the same pattern that she was wearing; there was a lot of pink, red, and purple involved.

At the end of this activity, the children presented their traced bodies on the wall by standing in front of them to compare the similarities. They all were proud of their creations. Throughout this activity, the children experienced cooperation by working in pairs for their project. They had a chance to build a new relationship with their peers through the interactions. They worked on their fine motor skills such as cutting with scissors and improved eye and hand coordination. Finally, they learned about sizes, colours and shapes which enhanced their numeracy skills.
