Dressing Up

School-age 1

In the past month the children were engaged in practicing and learning to dress up. The boys and girls had an opportunity to explore with a variety of clothes such as dresses, leather jackets, button shirts, skirts, ball gowns, hats, aprons, scarves.

Daniel was showing Noah how to do the zipper in the leather jacket so he could pretend to be a pilot in their imaginary play. This practice encouraged them to master the hand-eye coordination skills. It was amazing to see how the children were willing to cooperate and help each other with tying the aprons or putting on the velcro at the back of the ball dress. It shows that they are capable and independent as well as makes them feel confident and good about themselves.

Seerat wanted to learn how to flip the sleeve inside out of the dress so an educator showed her the way. She learned very quickly and was happy that she was able to solve the problem. Daniel was very determined to button the dress shirt all the way down. Buttoning the shirt was a great practice of coordination skills as well as his patience. As the boys and girls were stretching and pulling the clothes on, they also worked on their gross motor skills.

Experimenting with the fabric textures gave the children an opportunity to feel and learn new textile vocabulary such as sleek like the leather, fluffy and soft like a fur, sparkly like glitter. This activity showed that the children learn best when they work with their hands and It could very clearly be seen in this experience.
