Fall is a season full of vibrant colours, and the changing leaves offer a perfect opportunity to help toddlers learn about seasonal changes. Today, we set up a wonderful observation activity that truly engaged the children’s senses as they looked at, felt, and explored many different types of leaves.
Outdoors, the children were completely fascinated by their environment, eagerly exploring the playground to collect leaves, flowers, acorns, and pinecones. Once we returned to the classroom, we spread our natural treasures across the light table for further exploration. The light table always brings a sense of wonder and curiosity to our learning; the toddlers were amazed to see how the warm light illuminated the objects, revealing the delicate, transparent details of the leaves.
Each child engaged with the materials in their own unique way. Some gently smelled the flowers and leaves, while others crushed the pinecones to investigate the small pieces scattering across the table surface. One toddler excitedly shared that the yellow red leaves and purple flowers were her absolute favourite; another toddler decided to put all the leaves back into the bin and practiced sequencing by arranging the natural materials in order, placing the leaves first, then the flowers.
Overall, this hands-on exploration beautifully connected our toddlers to the magic of autumn while fostering their natural curiosity and love for discovery. Learning about seasonal changes is one of the most effective ways to create wonders and to build a connection to and appreciation for nature. We look forward to exploring more of nature's colours and wonders before the first snow arrives!
