Colours of Fall

  • School-age 1

In the month of October, the children were participating in many activities which included the process art. Children were experimenting with watercolour paints and freshly squeezed lemon juice on the surface.

The children had a sheet of white construction paper, liquid watercolours, paint brushes and half of a lemon. They were covering the paper with their chosen colours of paints, creating their own unique design. Once they had finished it, they were given the lemon and started squeezing it over the painted design.  As soon the juice touched the surface, the acid from the lemon juice started to react by showing the paints fizzing and bubbling on the paper. Suddenly, the colour lightened or shifted tones. It really was a WOW factor. Harper was observing what was happening on her artwork saying that the rainbow turned into a cloud.  Grayson noticed that the colours started to disappear. Ezra enjoyed squeezing the lemon. He announced that he is making lemonade.

During this activity, the children participated in a science experiment by observing the acidic reaction. They also learned what is inside the lemon and how to get the juice out of the lemon. Some of them squeezed the juice with two hands and found it hard to do. By squeezing the lemon, the boys and girls were working and strengthening their hand muscles.

This activity brought a little summer sunshine indoors. The bright yellow colour, the zesty scent and unique prints made this great hands-on way to explore texture, smell, colour mixing and creativity all while keeping children engaged in a no pressure, open ended art experience.  Process art celebrates the experience of discovery where the final product is always unique and the focus lies in the creation of the work not the outcome.
