The Shadow Table Experience

Preschool 1

This month we made a shadow table for our preschoolers to explore. We got out a big white blanket, some coloured blocks, dinosaurs and flashlights! The preschoolers helped set up the table. We then turned off the lights, and turned the flash lights on. Lukas shinned the light on the coloured blocks, “I see green” shouted Shay. “I see pink” exclaimed Lukas. “I see yellow” shouted Dhruv. We then asked the preschoolers what they think will happen if we put the blue block in front of the yellow block. “I’m not sure” replied George. We than shinned the light on the two blocks and it made the colour green! We than did the same with a few other colours. “I see purple”, explained Isla. “I see orange” shouted Henry N.  After we were done with the blocks the preschoolers wanted to see the dinosaur’s shadows next. While Dhruv and Isla went to go and grab some of the dinosaurs, I asked the children what dinosaur they think they will see. “A long neck” shouted Shay. “A t-rex” said George. We put the dinosaur in front of the white sheet, we shinned the light on the first dinosaur. “It’s a kiwi head dinosaur because it has a kiwi head” explained Dhruv. “That’s a long neck dinosaur” shouted JJ. All of the preschoolers were interested in seeing all the different dinosaur shadows, Shay thought it would be a good idea to show her puppy next! “It’s my puppy’s shadow!” shouted Shay. During this activity the children were able to use their colour recognition and identify the colours they saw. As well as identify the colours that we mixed together. The preschoolers also used their past knowledge to label each dinosaur shadow they saw. We used our communication skills to talk with the peers and the educators about what they see!
