During the month of November, school-age 1 has taken an interest in taking pictures and videos on the iPad. Throughout the month we have gathered so many different perspectives of the children in what they capture. The photography gives them the freedom to interpret the world through their very unique perspective, and gives us a way to see through their eyes. Children often view the world with fresh curiosity, unfiltered emotions and an innate sense of wonder that adults can lose over time.
The children capture images of things they may find beautiful, funny or interesting. When the children take these photos, they are able to notice different details like colours, shapes and textures. This can help them see the world in new ways and pay more attention to what’s around them. This lets them be creative in the way that they can choose what exactly they would like to photograph - maybe a toy, a special friend or even a sunrise on the dewy playground. This can help us see the beauty in things we may take for granted. This perspective reminds us to approach life with openness and to find joy in the simple moments.
Photos can help kids become storytellers. When they look back at any pictures they have taken, they can share why they took them, what they saw or how it made them feel. Additionally, this practice can help build their confidence in sharing their thoughts and feelings and can boost their communication skills in understanding their own emotions.
Overall, a picture is often said to speak a thousand words, and in the hand of children, this expression becomes even more powerful. By providing them with iPads to capture photos and videos, we are not just offering them a tool, but giving them the freedom to explore their creativity, express themselves, and document their world in a fun and engaging way. This hands-on experience allows them to develop a deeper connection with their surroundings, while also fostering essential skills in self-confidence, storytelling, and self-expression.
