Carrot Cake!

  • Toddler

5 Toddlers and a toddler educator, one toddler is holding a cup with soil as the educator is putting something in the cupThe toddler’s have been showing a growing interest in carrots, especially Otto during lunch and snack times. This interest has been very present in the kitchen area with Otto making carrot cake and Morgan making carrot ice cream. To expand this interest and curiosity, the toddler’s participated in planting th15 cups of soil in a bucketeir own carrots in disposable cups. During the process, the toddler’s scooped soil into their own cups, added in 2-3 seeds into the soil, and watered them. As Morgan watered her seeds, she said, “my carrots are going to be so big!”. They showed great focus and enthusiasm as they explored the gardening process together as a group. Each day the toddler’s have the responsibility to water their own carrots to ensure that they are getting the proper nutrients and growing. Their enthusiasm for planting and caring for the carrot seeds demonstrates growing independence, responsibility, and patience.

This experience highlights the toddler’s natural curiosity and growing understanding of the world around them. Their interest in carrots inspired them to participate in planting and caring for the seeds, showing enthusiasm, teamwork, and developing responsibility. Through this hands-on activity, the children are learning about nature, healthy foods, and the process of growth in a meaningful way. Moving forward, the educators in the room can build on this interest further by involving the toddler’s in the spring garden planting on the playground. The educators can also explore gardening books, sensory activities, and introduce new fruits or vegetables for the children to learn about.
