This month the school-age 1 group was interested in art activities. The children loved to learn and explore new things. To scaffold their interest, Educator Mona brought in some plastic gloves, plastic cups, markers, and straws. She set up the table with different sizes of bunnies, and artificial grass. As soon as the children observed the table, they ran over and asked, “What are we making today Mona?” and she said, “Let's make bunnies.” The children were so excited to start the activity, and they immediately began blowing into the cups with straws and inflating the gloves. As they worked on their bunnies, the children began to notice how the gloves were expanding and taking a new shape. They were witnessing cause and affect. They started experimenting with different sizes and shapes, adding features like floppy ears.
Through the bunny making activity, the children developed a range of skills. They learned scientific skills such as experimenting, and observing, as well as artistic skills such as drawing, coloring, and adding details to the bunnies. They also developed fine motor skills through the manipulation of the gloves and the cups. Overall, the bunny-making activity was a fun and engaging way to promote the development of a range of skills in children.
