Where Does It Go When We Colour The Snow?

The toddlers have been enjoying the snow so much! To enhance their outdoor play, we decided to provide bottles of coloured water. Taking turns, the toddlers tipped, squeezed and poured the water onto the snow. We all watched as the colours appeared on the snow top.

Theo had the blue bottle to start. He tipped it on an angle and began squeezing it. As the water came out of the bottle he giggled and said, “blue, blue.” Ezra held the purple bottle upside down and let the water drip out. Morley was near by watching and squealed with excitement as the snow turned purple!!

Ford and Morley shared the yellow bottle. Ford held the bottle down and squeezed it. “Oh, yellow,” he said.

Finley noticed the snow was melting as the water touched it. “Where it go?” said Ben. The toddlers opened a conversation about melting and how the snow melts when it gets warm. Using this interest, we can create a sensory bin with ice and warm water to see how the water melts the ice. The toddlers continued to pour colours onto the snow and label them as they appeared.

Throughout this experience the toddlers used their fine motor abilities to hold and squeeze bottles, colour recognition as we saw and labelled different colours, and social skills like taking turns and communicating with each other.
