The Infants Chose to Colour

Melody went into the craft cupboard, with Raelynn and Levi, to look for an idea for doing art. Raelynn and Levi let Melody know that they wanted to explore with the crayons so she followed their lead and interest in the moment.

Melody and Shannon brainstormed together on how to set up paper to colour in a way that was inviting for the children to explore. Melody added paper to the mirror so they could see themselves as they drew. Raelynn found a piece of paper to add to the mirror as well. She held it up while Melody taped it to the mirror. What great teamwork! Raelynn, Levi and Atlas went right to colouring. Atlas would draw a line, look back at Melody and smile as if to see if she was watching. Levi used one crayon to colour another crayon too. Melody wondered If one crayon would be able to leave It's colour on the other. Levi also used great hand coordination as he explored colouring with two crayons in his hands at once.

Melody and Shannon both observed that all 3 children drew vertical lines from the top of the paper to the bottom. Melody wondered if it was because they were standing, so she added plexiglass with paper to the floor. They all began to draw horizontal lines. Levi did some vertical lines as well. Raelynn and Levi tried to colour on the tape but noticed it didn’t work. Levi tested out his idea of laying down on his back to draw horizontal lines across the paper, on the mirror. Melody and Shannon wondered what made him choose to draw that way while on his back. He got up, turned his head to the other side and did the same thing on the yellow paper. How interesting Melody thought.

When Clara woke up, she added a toy turtle to the paper and made a dot. She went to different pieces of paper and continued to make dots. Clara was very interested in the crayon that Shannon accidentally broke. Clara pulled it to make It come apart completely which seemed intriguing to Clara, observed through her facial expression. Levi worked on trying to get it back together. Beau liked to bang his crayon on the paper on the mirror. Did It make a nice, loud sound, Beau? Dean was all about hiding his crayon in the carpet as he explored object permanence (i.e. Knowing something is still there even if you cannot see it).

To extend this activity, we could try drawing on different surfaces like sand paper as it has a bumpy texture.
