This month, the children at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Patrick enjoyed exploring their throats through pretend play. After observing children playing with pretend money, store and use their own imagination to create different play experiences we planned to set up a grocery story in the classroom. The children were very excited to see the setup. They reset the store as their imagination. They used the food items, price tags and money to create their own shopping experience. As they played, their ideas expanded and they turned the grocery store into a beach club. The children worked in a team and set up chairs, drinks pictures, price tags, money counters and dressed up fake flowers, glasses, hats and waiter aprons. They used notepads to take orders. Children took on the roles of manager, waiters, and customers. The children asked questions like ”how are you?” And “what would you like to drink? “. They decided prices, planned turns taking and shared different responsibilities. It is wonderful to see children take the lead in their play. They shared ideas, solved problems, made decisions, solved problems, and worked in a team. Throughout this experience the children learned communication, early maths skill, creativity, cooperation and problem solving. After this activity my coworker set up a drivethrough activity with different food items on a table. The children enjoyed this new idea. These experiences show how one idea can grow into many different learning experiences. Throughout these experiences, children are learning skills like communication, solving problems, sharing ideas, cooperation, and decision making. They are developing early math skills by counting money and deciding prices. We will continue to observe children’s interests and provide activities as per their interests so they can share their ideas, work together, and extend their pretend play.
