Our pumpkin exploration began with curiosity and wonder as the children used their senses to investigate a big pumpkin. Through touching, smelling, scooping, and eventually painting and decorating, the children discovered that a pumpkin offers many opportunities for learning, creativity, and sensory exploration.
When the educator asked, “What do you think this is?” Isabelle and Ramona answered together, “Pumpkin!” The children touched and rubbed its smooth, cool surface. Isabelle pressed her cheek against it and exclaimed, “It’s cold! It’s cold!” Ramona followed her lead, and the children continued exploring its texture.
We invited the children to discover what was inside the pumpkin. After carefully opening it, the children peered inside and exclaimed, “Wooooow!” Using spoons and their hands, they explored the seeds and pulp. Lucas preferred not to touch the pumpkin directly but enjoyed separating the seeds from the pulp. Paxton smelled the pulp, while Thaniel, Kaito, and Izzy continued scooping and investigating its contents.
We extended their learning through a pumpkin painting activity with colourful paints, different paintbrushes and colourful tissue papers. Maria chose purple, Paxton orange, and Izzy green paint. The children experimented with gliding, tapping, and circular brushstrokes while other children started putting colourful tissue paper on the pumpkin. Kaito excitedly chose orange paint and said, “Oyens!” When Logan ran low on paint, he asked Arcely, “More?” and nodded when she offered him more paint. Thaniel explored differently by brushing paint onto his fingers and gently rubbing his hands against his cheeks.
Through these connected experiences, the children explored textures, colours, and materials while strengthening their fine-motor skills and hand-eye coordination. They practised making choices, communicating their needs, and expressing their creativity. By following their curiosity, we supported the children's natural desire to discover, experiment, and learn through play.
