- Program Name: School-age 2
Over the last few weeks, the children in School Age 2 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Patrick have been actively exploring colors and different painting techniques through various art materials. To build on this interest, we decided to extend their exploration of color mixing on canvas by introducing balloons rather than brushes. The children experienced two different reactions to the same activity. A few children filled with excitement as they pressed down on the balloon. With every bit of pressure, they watched the colors blend, shift, and spread across the canvas, creating unique, unpredictable designs.
Right beside them, another child experienced a different feeling. They had carefully chosen specific colors, but when they pressed down with the balloon, the result wasn’t what they expected. There was a moment of quiet disappointment when the canvas didn’t match the picture in their mind. Instead of walking away, the children began to look at each other’s work and talk. They experimented with how hard to push, adjusted their ideas, and learned to navigate that tricky feeling of surprise. They learned that a “mistake” or an unexpected turn is just a new way of creativity.
This experience showed us how deeply the children are developing their communication, flexibility, creative problem-solving, and emotional regulation skills. I was so proud of how the children talked to each other and tried new ways to press the balloons. It can be hard when things don’t turn out exactly how we planned, but they showed so much strength by trying again and turning a surprise into beautiful art.
To build on this wonderful communication and problem-solving, we can introduce more “unpredictable” art, like marble painting or string-pull art, to help them practice letting go of specific outcomes and enjoying the process.
