YDP: Before & After School for Grades 3-6

Youth Development Programs (YDP) are extended care for children in Grades 3 – 6. YDP before and after school programs are offered at several public schools within the Waterloo Region District School Board. This program is designed to engage children in learning, create adventures and nurture personal relationships. Our Youth Development Program has access to many school spaces including the gym, library, classrooms and computer labs. The program is operated by Owl Child Care on behalf of the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB). Choose before school, after school or both. Parents have the option of enrolling their child for 2, 3, 4 or 5 days per week on a set recurring schedule.

With a strong reputation and over 35 years experience, Owl is a leader in early learning & child care in the Waterloo Region. Our staff support each child in realizing their potential, while giving families peace of mind.

The following cluster of public schools has been assigned to Owl Child Care to operate Youth Development Programs. Annually in January, the WRDSB will ask parents to register as an expression of interest in the YDP programs to determine viability. Viability - whether the YDP program will run or not, will be determined on a school-by-school basis and confirmed by May 1. In determining viability, Owl aims to support as many parents and communities as possible while using our resources wisely.

The following information pertains to children enrolled in Owl's Youth Development Prorgrams within the above-noted schools of the Waterloo Region District School Board.

Ensure a Smooth Transition

At Owl, we understand that your relationship with your child care, extended day or YDP provider is one built on trust and experience; that children and families develop deep bonds with the educators. We know that it may have come as a shock to hear that the program would transition to a new provider. We hope, in time, that you will build a positive relationship with Owl and our educators as well. For now, we are committed to working with you and the current provider to ensure a smooth transition. Here's how you can help:

  • Register on OneList for the 2019-20 YDP program to ensure accurate numbers as we assess and determine viability.
  • Later in the school year, complete an Exchange of Information form that allows Owl to speak with your current provider to gain insight into your child's strengths, any areas for development or support.
  • If your child has an Individual Support Plan, Safety Plan or any accomodations in place, ask your current provider to share them with us. Consider the possibility of a joint case conference to discuss how both organizations can support you and your child to have a smooth transition.
  • Be open. We know we may do things differently than your currenrt provider; we may make some mistakes too. While we have over 35 years of experience in providing high quality before and after school programs, there are some differences in program expectations between school boards. Provide us with your feedback and work with us to make the program a success.

We look forward to getting to know you and your child and welcoming them to the YDP next September.
