Boat Challenge

School-age 3

The children in School-Age Group 3 consistently demonstrate a willingness to embrace new challenges. In February, the group participated in a hands-on STEM-based boat design challenge. The objective was to design and construct a boat capable of floating while holding as many markers as possible before sinking.

With enthusiasm and determination, the children eagerly accepted the challenge. They chose to work either collaboratively or independently, applying teamwork and problem-solving skills throughout the process. Emmett and Ella worked together and began by developing a detailed blueprint of their design. Emmett proposed adding an anchor, believing it would help stabilize and position the boat in the water. Ella focused on the creative elements, decorating their boat with a pirate ship theme.

Other children explored different materials, such as empty soap containers and various loose parts, to build and enhance their boats. Lucy designed a cat-themed boat, while several others drew inspiration from their peers and incorporated new ideas into their own creations. This collaborative environment encouraged creativity, communication, and shared learning.

After a week of designing and constructing their boats, the group tested their creations. Some boats demonstrated impressive strength and buoyancy, successfully holding up to nine markers before sinking.

To conclude the activity, the children voted on their favorite design among the top four finalists, with Lucy earning first place. The educators commended all participants for their effort, creativity, and perseverance. This engaging challenge not only sparked imagination but also supported the development of critical thinking, engineering concepts, collaboration, and problem-solving skills.
