Black History Month

Preschool

This month in the preschool room we have been learning about Black History. The children have been engaged in intentional, play-based learning experiences that supported their understanding of diversity, equity, and inclusion. “Who remembers what Amanda was talking about that happens in the month of February?” Jenn asked the preschool children. “Black History!” Kairo yelled out. “That’s right Kairo,” Jenn said. Jenn then brought out a poster demonstrating different African American heroes who helped change the world. “Does anyone notice anything from these people?" Jenn asked. “I see a baseball player!” Caiden said excitedly. “That right, Caiden! That’s Jackie Robinson” Jenn said. “That guy has a trumpet,” Kairo said pointing to Louis Armstrong.

Through large group discussions and shared readings about popular African Americans such as Martin Luther King Jr., Mae Jemison, Garret Morgan, Jackie Robinson, and Louis Armstrong, the educators guided the children through opportunities for critical thinking, language development, and knowledge-building. The preschool children also demonstrated emerging social awareness as they explored concepts of fairness, kindness, perseverance, and community. Rich conversations encouraged perspective-taking and strengthened their expressive and receptive communication skills.

Hands-on creative experiences further supported holistic development across multiple domains. By exploring and matching diverse skin tones, the children engaged in identity development, self-awareness, and positive self-concept formation. Art activities inspired by themes of love, dreams, and future aspirations fostered symbolic representation, fine motor development, and imaginative thinking. These experiences reflect developmentally appropriate practice, while promoting belonging, well-being, engagement, and expression and nurturing empathy and an inclusive classroom environment for everyone.
