Isabella placed a mixing bowl along with the required materials to make slime on the table. We began discussing the different materials required to make slime - the ingredients consisted of glue, dish soap, food colouring and baking soda. Leo said, “We have dish soap at home!” Stella said, “Me too!” Isabella fostered the children’s use of language by providing them with the name of the materials and asking the children questions such as, “What do we use glue for?” and “What do we use dish soap for?” Joe knew that dish soap is used to wash and clean dishes.

Isabella began by putting one ingredient into the bowl followed by each child in the small group. Through this experience, each child had the opportunity to demonstrate hand-eye coordination skills. After mixing the ingredients in the bowl, Isabella noticed the texture of the slime was not accurate - she said to the children, “We need to add more of an ingredient to make it thicker. What should we add?” All of the children said different ingredients which contributed to the development of their cognitive and problem solving skills. Isabella added more glue and continued mixing - the slime was then ready! The children were able to see that common items can make a cool mixture of ingredients.


The children engaged with the slime and interacted with one another. A few children used their cars to drive through the slime. Luke said, “Look at my tire marks!” Stella said, “My slime is sticky!” Carter said, “Green slime!” This was a wonderful sensory play experience that allowed the children to explore and investigate the mixture of the ingredients. It encouraged the use of describing words which fostered their language and social skills.
