Our Olympic Village

School-age 2

Happy Winter Olympics season everyone! Our school-age group has shown so much excitement toward the Olympics and all it has to offer, so with that in mind we created our very own Olympic Village. For our “Opening Ceremony,” each child was sorted into one of four teams: Team Italy, Team Japan, Team Norway, or of course, Team Canada. Each participant received a team lanyard to help them remember which country they were representing and who their teammates were.

To kick things off, the children created their country’s flag using their lanyards as references, proudly showing off their team spirit before jumping into our first competition. Our first event was curling! Using targets and lids, the children worked on sliding their “stones” toward the bullseye to earn as many points as possible for their team. Team Italy and Team Norway came out with the first wins of the season, and it was so much fun watching the children cheer on one another and showcase their collaboration and teamwork skills. Over the next few days, we continued with a variety of gross-motor Olympic events including paper plate skating, luge (sledding), relay races, and tabletop hockey. These games truly brought out their competitive spirit as the children proudly chanted their country’s name, hoping to secure a win for their team.

Alongside the athletic events, the children enjoyed a number of creative activities. They crafted their own Olympic torches to use in relay races, created country flags, drew the Olympic rings, designed their very own medals, and had the most fun working together within their teams to create a mascot. Each mascot will be entered into competition to determine our overall class Olympic mascot. As our Olympic Village continues, the excitement is only building!

In the days ahead, the children will take on new events, cheer on their teammates, and continue to work on their skills in teamwork, problem-solving, and sportsmanship. We’ll be wrapping up our games with final competitions, and a celebratory closing ceremony to honor everyone’s hard work and participation. We can’t wait to see how the rest of our Olympic journey unfolds, let the games continue!
