Lately, the educators in Toddler 1 at RisingOaks Early Learning | St. Brigid, have noticed that many of the toddlers have been wanting to dump baskets of toys throughout the room. To further this interest, the educators set up a Montessori inspired activity of pouring. Utilizing our tuff tray, we got 2 containers of water and added a little bit of food coloring to each, yellow and blue. Each toddler got a scoop and a plastic cup and educator Trish demonstrated how to pour the water back and forth.
We started with one colour each until we got the hang of it. While the toddlers were pouring there were some spills so educator Aly used a turkey baster to suck up the water to re-use. When she did that everyone noticed that her water was green! So together we poured some yellow and some blue into one cup and everyone thought it was so cool and that they wanted green too! Everyone got a chance to mix the colours themselves and make their very own green water.
Pouring and dumping is discovery and exploration of gravity, weight, muscle control, cause and effect, and self-awareness. Not only are toddlers discovering what they can do by pouring, they are learning about their environment while working on so many skills!
