Fall Cookie Creations
November 2019

Today the infants were able to get their minds working and hands messy, as well as experiencing simple math skills as they assisted in measuring, mixing and pouring during our cookie baking experience.

Zoey was the first friend who showed her interest in the activity. She explored the flour using her hands and felt the velvety texture through her fingers. Jack held some of the ingredients as he stood at the table observing the group.

Addy helped to pour 1 cup of icing sugar into the bowl and mixed it into the flour. Zoë was observing at first, she found the 1 cup measuring cup and explored it through taste while her peers cut and added one pound of butter into the dry ingredients. She couldn’t get enough of the taste.

Together, using two butter knives, Zoey and Connie cut the butter into the flour mixture. Addy and Zoë were also able to experience cutting up the butter, while creating a fine crumble with the help of Connie.

Lily explored the dough using her hands. She observed Connie, mixing the dough and squishing it together to form balls, for the cookie press. After that step was done, Connie made a well in the dough and Tami poured in food colouring to change the colours.

Alicia was intentional after this trying to pour in the food colouring she was holding into the bowl. Elise was able to work her fine motor skills as she pressed the handle on the cookie press to create different fall colour cookies to end our leaf project. Boy were they tasty.

Recipe: Pressed Shortbread Cookies

  • 4 cups flour
  • 1 cup icing sugar
  • 1 pound softened butter
  • Food colouring (optional)
  • Combine all ingredients together until they form a ball. Shape the ball to fit in a cookie press and start pressing your cookies.
  • Bake at 350 for 5-8 minutes depending on thickness. If they are golden brown, you have cooked them too long.
