Preparing for Spring

With spring approaching, it’s a good time to check sizes on your children’s splash pants, spring jackets and rubber boots. If they don’t fit, now’s the perfect time to find them in the stores.
As well, remember to label all items (with your Mabel's Labels, of course!).

Preventing Illness

Although some illness is inevitable in group care, our educators try to minimize this by practicing good hygiene, sanitizing toys and equipment regularly, and making daily health checks. We encourage children to participate in tidying and organizing their environment. Educators will model and support children with procedures for routine hand washing when entering the classroom from being outside, before and after food preparation, handling and eating, as well as toileting.

All parents should be aware of the symptoms of an influenza like illness (ILI).

They include: Fever and cough, PLUS one or more of: Sore throat, Muscle aches, Joint pain and Weakness.

In children under 5, gastrointestinal symptoms may also be present and a fever may not be as prominent.

It is recommended that you seek immediate medical attention should or your child experience the

• Difficulty breathing
• Shortness of breath
• Chest pain
• Severe or persistent vomiting
• High fever in adults that lasts more than 2 days
• Severe tiredness in a child
• Confusion or difficulty waking an ill person

We will continue to review and encourage proper hand and cough etiquette for all children, staff and visitors at Owl. All are encouraged to cough or sneeze into a tissue or their sleeve, and to frequently wash their hands. We are also increasing our sanitary practices for common surfaces, such as door knobs, to help stop the spread of influenza like illness (ILI) symptoms.

Exclusion Guidelines

The following guidelines are provided by Waterloo Region Public Health.

Vomiting & diarrhea: Remain home until you are symptom free for 24 hours; 48 hours when centre is in outbreak

ILI symptoms (see above): Stay home until you no longer have a fever and feel well enough to participate in program

Note: A cough may continue and is not a reason to be excluded from program. However, please remind your child to cough into their sleeve and to wash their hands often.

For more information on child illness, please see page 22 and 23 in our Parent Handbook

Inclement Weather and Unexpected Centre Closure

In the event of inclement weather, Owl will close centes when the Waterloo Region District School Board (WRDSB) and the Waterloo Catholic Region School Board (WCRSB) have decided to close schools. School boards try to make closure decisions by 6:00 a.m, and therefore, Owl closures will be communicated immediately after hearing of school board decisions.

Late Fees

Owl has a late fee policy. If you are late picking up your child after 6:00pm, a fee of $1.00 for every minute you are late will be charged. This fee is payable directly to the staff member who has stayed late on their own time.

Thank you for your understanding.

Withdrawing from Service

If circumstances make it necessary to withdraw a child from the centre for any reason, one month’s notice in writing is required by the 1st of the month (e.g., if the last day of care will be August 31st, notice must be received by August 1st ). Customer deposits will be credited to the account and any necessary adjustments (i.e., outstanding balances or additional credits) will be made.

No Food from Home Please

Children are served snack from 8:15 am to 9:00 am, a nutritious lunch, and snack again in the afternoon. In an effort to provide an Allergy Safe environment, and to minimize the risk of cross contamination, we ask that you do not send food from home unless your child has an approved Food Agreement. If you have an approved Food Agreement to provide food from home while your child is at the centre, please remember that all food must be labeled and stored at the proper temperature as per the directions on the Food Agreement.

Thank you for your co-operation.

What About Birthday Treats?

Birthdays are the only other exception to the “no food from home” rule. On your child’s birthday you may send in a special craft, stickers or a small food treat for your child to share.

*Please note that food sent in, must be store bought, have an ingredients label and not contain nuts or a warning that it may have come in contact with nuts.

For more information on allergies and food agreements, please visit our Allergies page.

Playground Use

During the winter months, the playground climbers will be closed. When the ground is frozen and the climbers are covered in snow, it is unsafe for the children to be on them. This is a requirement of the CSA Playground Guidelines. If you are picking your child up during outside time, please gather their belongings before getting them. This will reduce the amount of snow being tracked through the cubby area. Please ensure that the gate is closed when you leave for the safety of all of our children.
