Building Blocks Exploration

Toddlers have been observed exploring different Lego blocks and big foam blocks. They enjoy building cars, towers, stepping stones, and more. Oscar connected different coloured Legos and created a large art piece, calling it "Big Truck." He even attempted to load it with cars and people. Amaira, Quinn, and Carina built stepping stones with rubber blocks and devised a challenge to pile blocks and climb and jump from them. Kayden had fun building a tower taller than himself. Toddlers engaged in team play, with some helping each other build a big tower and then breaking it together.

Based on their interests, we provided various types of building blocks. A shelf was allocated for wooden blocks of different sizes and colours, along with toy cars. Dante was delighted to find different blocks on the shelf. He stacked the larger blocks on the carpet, creating a beautiful art piece. Carina neatly organized her blocks and felt proud, asking educators to check her work. Educators created a ramp and asked toddlers to roll their cars down it, observing and discussing the speed of each car. Callum particularly enjoyed this activity, noting that the "airplane is fast." Carina and Callum collaborated to make challenging stepping stones, using ramps and blocks of various sizes to challenge themselves in changing directions and maintaining balance. I encouraged toddlers to explore small building blocks and construct according to their imagination. Delilah stacked different blocks to create what she called a "playground," while Austeja piled blocks to form an art piece resembling a bridge, which she called a "train."

To further expand their exploration, I introduced small building blocks and different shape cards on the table for matching activities. Dante picked a train card and carefully selected blocks that matched the shapes and colours on the card. Although he consistently referred to all colours as "yellow," he demonstrated attention to detail in matching shapes and colours. Delilah attempted to match a fish card with blocks, challenging herself to replace the card among the blocks. When she struggled, she asked for help and followed guidance on how to replace the card without changing its position.

To deepen their learning, Tirhas introduced a building picture challenges. Toddlers were given cards with different building pictures and were encouraged to recreate them using blocks. Callum showed understanding of the task, selecting blocks that matched the colours in the picture and constructing a building. Amaira focused on matching shapes rather than colours initially, but upon completion, she compared her building to the picture and recognized the colour differences. She eagerly asked to try again and continued to refine her constructions with attention to detail. Carina approached the task with a focus on matching both colours and shapes, comparing her creations to the pictures and expressing pride in her achievements.
